Toyota Still Sells A $12K Wagon Like It’s 2002 And No One Seems To Mind

The ultra-basic Probox wagon is now equipped with better ADAS but loses the entry-level powertrain option

Toyota Still Sells A $12K Wagon Like It’s 2002 And No One Seems To Mind

  • Toyota updates aging Probox with new safety tech and cabin tweaks.
  • It gains a Corolla steering wheel, new seats, and an optional mirror.
  • Lineup includes 1.5L gas and hybrid options, after dropping the 1.3L.

The Toyota Probox is a bit of an oddity on Japanese roads, a utilitarian wagon that, despite its workhorse DNA and a shape that some might say falls somewhere between a van and an afterthought, has endured for over a decade with few complaints and fewer changes.

Yet somehow, it keeps drawing in new buyers, unfazed by trends or the passage of time.

Toyota has now given the Probox a few updates for the 2026 model year, aimed mostly at meeting Japan’s latest safety requirements and extending the shelf life of a vehicle that already seems immune to obsolescence.

The original Probox debuted in 2002, while the current generation arrived in 2014 with changes that felt more like a facelift than a full redesign. It has since seen a steady drip of updates, but the 4,245 mm-long wagon (167.1 inches) still wears the same basic sheet metal and carries over the same interior layout. That continuity isn’t changing now either.

What’s New for 2026?

The biggest news for 2026 is the improved Toyota Safety Sense suite that was required by the local legislation. It includes an improved Pre-Crash Safety system that can now operate at intersections, along with Proactive Driving Assist to help with steering input and deceleration. A Parking Support Brake rounds out the list, adding some assistance for tighter urban maneuvering.

Inside, the Probox sticks to the essentials. The analog gauge cluster gains a new 4.2-inch multi-information display, paired with a redesigned steering wheel borrowed from the Corolla that adds integrated buttons.

There’s still no infotainment screen, as in its place sits a molded plastic panel that reinforces the Probox’s resistance to gadgetry.

Optional features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compact built-in monitor, as well as easy-clean seat covers for customers who prefer wipe-down practicality over plush comfort.

Platform and Powertrain

Mechanically, the Probox still rides on the bones of the discontinued Corolla Axio and Fielder, phased out earlier in 2025. It also underpins the JPN Taxi, which is still in production, and traces its lineage to older versions of the Yaris (Vitz), Prius C (Aqua), and even the Sienna, though all of those have since migrated to Toyota’s TNGA-B platform.

For 2026, Toyota has trimmed the powertrain lineup. The base 1.3-liter engine is gone, leaving the 1.5-liter inline-four as the standard option. It puts out 107 hp and is paired with a CVT that sends power either to the front wheels or all four, depending on which box the buyer ticked.

There’s also a hybrid variant, which uses a less powerful version of the same engine paired with a single electric motor, offering a more efficient setup to the lineup.

Still Budget-Friendly

Pricing for the updated Toyota Probox starts at ¥1,918,400 and tops out at ¥2,261,600, or roughly $12,300 to $14,500 depending on the trim and exchange rates. That makes it about ¥210,000 ($1,350) more expensive than before, though it remains one of the least costly wagons available for both private buyers and fleet operators.

With Nissan retiring the AD earlier this month, the Probox has just one true rival left: the Mazda Familia Van, which is essentially a rebadged version of the same platform. In other words, Toyota’s well-worn wagon still has a place in the market, even if that place hasn’t changed much in years
