- The SUV was seized in 2024 and found to contain several stolen components.
- Critics slammed the crushing but police claimed it wasn’t fit for auction use.
Police in Louisville, Kentucky have crushed a 2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat as part of their “ongoing fight against illegal street racing and dangerous takeovers.” However, they turned the affair into a 20 minute publicity stunt that culminated with Mayor Craig Greenberg pushing the button to crush it.

The high-performance crossover was confiscated during the 2024 Street Rod Nationals and police said it was one of 167 vehicles seized since they began cracking down on street racing and takeovers in 2023.
Explaining their approach, the department stated, “This isn’t just about one car. It’s about protecting lives, restoring order, and showing that our city stands united against reckless behavior.” They added that the crushing should “serve as a warning to those who think they can turn our streets into speedways.”

While the crushing itself was pretty anticlimactic, it infuriated a number of people who said the vehicle should have just been auctioned off instead. However, the police department explained it was “found to contain multiple stolen parts, including its engine.” Because of this, they decided it was “unfit” for auction or being transformed into a police vehicle due to liability and cost issues.
Cameras Rolling
Despite this, the department certainly didn’t have cost concerns about the publicity stunt as the crushing was apparently caught on at least five different cameras, including one that appears to have been mounted on a drone. However, they’ve accomplished their mission of getting people to notice.
Mayor Greenberg said, “I will not tolerate behavior that puts our people, our families, at risk.” He added illegal street racing is down nearly 40% and anyone thinking about doing it in Louisville should think again, because you’re not welcome here and we’ll seize your car. He added if it’s not street legal, they’ll crush it.
