Only One Type Of Car Makes F1 Champ Verstappen Cringe And You Probably Own It

  • Max Verstappen slammed front-wheel drive as boring and anti-driving in a new video.
  • The Dutch F1 champ used to drive an FK8 Honda Civic Type R, a front-wheel drive legend.
  • Verstappen’s comments came during a Mustang GTD promo with Chris Harris.

Max Verstappen is one of the most dominant drivers in modern Formula 1, with four world championships and a long list of records that may not be touched for years. His raw talent behind the wheel is hard to miss. Yet there’s one type of car he’s never warmed to: anything that puts its power through the front wheels.

Growing up racing go-karts and open-wheeled race cars, the Dutch Word Champion is obviously most well-versed in driving rear-wheel drive cars. It’s perhaps for this reason why he has such ungodly driving skills, easily able to find a car’s limits. Recently, he jumped behind the wheel of the Ford Mustang GTD with veteran car journalist Chris Harris and revealed his disdain for front-wheel drive cars.

“It’s the worst thing ever”

Asked directly if he likes front-wheel drive, Verstappen responded with a firm “No, no, I think it’s really boring. Yeah, it’s really boring. When you drive it in a car, it’s for me, just like anti-driving.” He added that he has driven front-wheel drive vehicles in the simulator, too, noting that “it’s the worst thing ever.”

Verstappen’s History With Honda

While many would agree that front-wheel drive is synonymous with wrong-wheel drive, there have been plenty of superb FWD performance cars built over the decades. One of the standouts is the FL5-generation Honda Civic Type R, which Verstappen himself has driven plenty of times. He also used to drive an FK8 Civic Type R, as Honda had supplied the Red Bull Formula 1 team with its engines.

Verstappen’s video with Harris is well worth watching in its entirety. Starting next year, Ford will be working alongside Red Bull Powertrains on the F1 team’s hybrid powertrains, so this was one of the first times the reigning World Champion could do some promo for the Blue Oval.

During the first half of the video, the F1 winner sits in the passenger seat of a classic Ford RS200 before getting the keys to the new Mustang GTD towards the end of the video.
