Police in Ontario stopped a driver hauling a massive ladder more than twice the car’s length

- Smart ForTwo driver ticketed after hauling a massive ladder in Ontario.
- Ladder appeared more than twice as long as the 98.4-inch microcar.
- Driver cited for carrying an insecure load, which carries a $92 fine.
It’s official, size matters. That’s the word from the Ontario Provincial Police as they recently came across a big load shoved into a tight rear end.
We’ll give you a minute to get your mind out of the gutter, but the department recently chastised a driver for not being very smart. The irony was that he was driving a Smart ForTwo.
According to viral social media posts, authorities stopped the car in Carleton Place early yesterday morning for trying to haul a massive ladder in the tiny car. There’s no word on how tall the ladder was, but the first-generation ForTwo was a mere 98.4 inches (2,500 mm) long.

Judging by the picture, the ladder was more than twice as long as the car. This suggests the wayward driver was trying to haul a roughly 18-20’ ladder in the back of the car.
If that wasn’t sketchy enough, the ladder was shoved up against the dashboard and apparently secured with some loose rope. The back three quarters was just hanging, waiting for disaster to strike.
Police were less than amused and ticketed the driver for having an insecure load. According to the Ontario Court of Justice, the penalty for this is a $130 CAD ($92) fine. However, if this was a commercial vehicle, the penalty would have been $310 CAD ($220).
While the ForTwo faded into the history books last year, Smart recently announced plans for a successor known as the #2. It’s slated to debut next year, be fully electric, and ride on an “all-new proprietary architecture for ultra-compact vehicles.” However, you might want to leave the ladders at home.
