• Tesla is recalling 260 Model Y crossovers from the 2026 model year.
  • The vehicles have reverse lights that may fail to properly illuminate.
  • Wiring issue means connectors might not have been properly seated.

Even with much of the government idling through a shutdown, safety recalls haven’t taken a break. The latest one affects the 2026 Tesla Model Y, and this time the issue comes down to wiring.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a wiring problem can prevent the reverse lights from illuminating. This means they run afoul of federal motor vehicles safety standards.

The issue impacts 260 vehicles and every single one of them is believed to have the defect. Speaking of which, the problem is being blamed on a “loss of continuity in the rear lamp circuit as a result of the connector or terminal pin not being properly seated.”

Tesla first became aware of the issue on July 13, when a member of the Gigafactory Berlin team discovered the reverse lights on a Model Y failed to illuminate. The company spent months investigating the issue and eventually decided to conduct a recall.

As of last month, they’re aware of 94 warranty claims and two field reports related to the issue. However, there haven’t been any accidents or injuries.

Fixing The Fault

To address the problem, owners will need to take their vehicle to a service center where technicians will “inspect the reverse lamp housing and reverse fascia harness.” They’ll then repair or replace any defective components.

Owner notifications are scheduled to go out on November 30. While that’s a ways off, suppliers have already upgraded the lamp housing and harness hardware, while Tesla has implemented additional checks to improve reverse lamp failure detection.
