Ford Recalls Over 115,000 Tough Trucks Before Their Steering Columns Bail

  • Ford is recalling 115,539 examples of its F-250, F-350, and F-450 SD trucks.
  • The affected Super Duty machines were built between Feb 2019 and Sep 2020.
  • A faulty steering column could cause the upper part of the shaft to break free.

Just think how much more free time America’s mail carriers would have on their hands if they didn’t have to deliver millions of recall letters to Ford customers every year. They’d probably be able to fit in a round of golf or a trip to the movies, or get some wrenching time on their car in the middle of the day. But there’s no sign of that happening any time soon because today we got news of yet another Blue Oval quality campaign, this one involving its supposedly toughest vehicles.

Steering Trouble

A total of 115,539 examples of Ford’s Super Duty trucks are being recalled due to worries that the steering system could cease to steer. The automaker found that the upper part of the steering column on F-250, F-350, and F-450 trucks could pull away from the lower shaft, and though no related accidents have yet been reported, the issue obviously needs to be sorted quickly.

The affected trucks were all built at Ford’s Kentucky plant between February 2019 and September 2020, and each of them will have to make a date with a dealer to have the steering hardware inspected. Technicians will check the upper shaft for evidence of extension, and parts that fail the test will be replaced. Even those that do pass will need some surgery, Ford promising that they’ll be modified to improve pull-apart retention.

Ford’s 115th recall (!) this year is, to the relief of its busy workshop techs, a much smaller affair than its last one. A couple of weeks ago, we reported that Ford was recalling over a million vehicles due to a problem with their rear-view cameras.

An assortment of vehicles was caught up in the recall, including the 2015-2018 Edge, 2015-2017 Expedition, and 2017-2019 Econoline, plus the 2015-2019 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks. The list goes on, but you get the idea. It was a biggie, and unlike some camera recalls, it requires new hardware and can’t simply be fixed with a software update.
