Porsche looks set to have two new rival convertibles within the coming years – and they’re from the same French brand.

Renault’s performance arm, Alpine, is planning to offer roadster versions of its new-generation A110 and A310 sports cars by 2030, according to a new report from UK publication Autocar.

While the A110 is set to carry on the model’s legacy of low weight and agile handling, the A310 is said to share similar proportions with the current A110, but will adopt a more futuristic look – dropping the retro styling of its stablemate.

But as the A110 will likely continue as a two-seater, the A310 is expected to offer up to four seats – potentially competing against the Ford Mustang in the sports car segment, though offering a much different experience.

Meanwhile, the new-generation A110 is likely to take the fight to the Porsche Boxster, of which an all-electric version is currently in development.

The addition of the A110 and A310 roadsters will help fill out Alpine’s range, which will also consist of the recently-released A290 hot hatch – based on the Renault 5 electric hatch – and the Australia-bound A390 coupe SUV.

Alpine is also working on a pair of larger SUVs.

The introduction of two new convertibles is quite unusual in the 2020s, given Audi has now axed all of its drop-tops, BMW is pulling the plug on the Z4, and Mercedes-Benz has slimmed down its convertible lineup.

Electric convertibles also remain rare, with only two currently on sale in Australia: the MG Cyberster and Maserati GranCabrio Folgore.
