GM’s Comeback Story Isn’t Happening In America

  • GM is finding success in China, where deliveries climbed in the third quarter.
  • Buick sales soared thanks to strong demand for the Envision, LaCrosse, and GL8.
  • Cadillac sales rose too as the redesigned XT5 proved popular with local buyers.

The electric revolution might have fizzled in America, but it’s still going strong in China. Given this, Buick has decided that all future models will be New Energy Vehicles (NEV).

});

This means upcoming products will having a plug-in hybrid, battery electric, or extended-range powertrain. That’s a notable change as a number of models are currently offered with conventional engines. It could also eventually impact some US offerings as Buick imports the Envision from China.

Surging Momentum in China

While that remains to be seen, Buick is having a fantastic year as Chinese sales have surged 54.3% from a year ago. The facelifted GL8 appears to be a hit as sales are up 24.5%, while the Envision and LaCrosse are doing even better. Sales of the crossover more than tripled in the third quarter, while the LaCrosse nearly quadrupled.

The recently launched Buick Electra L7 has also received an “enthusiastic market reception.” The company added the sedan will be followed by an Electra minivan later this year.

Cadillac and Wuling Join the Charge

It’s not just Buick benefiting from this surge. Cadillac has also seen a lift, with sales up 11.2% year over year. The brand received a boost from the redesigned XT5, which saw third quarter sales nearly double.

One of the brightest stars was a vehicle few people have heard of. It’s the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV, which found around 117,000 buyers last quarter. That made it GM’s best-selling NEV in China and this was aided by the introduction of a new five-door variant, which found over 77,000 takers.

});

In total, GM and its joint ventures delivered nearly 470,000 vehicles in China during the third quarter. That’s up 10.1% from last year and stands out as many foreign automakers have been struggling in the country.
