  • California licenses and IDs now include scenic artwork and more security.
  • A digital signature and removal of magnetic strips enhance anti-fraud.
  • Current cards remain valid until expiry, with standard fees unchanged.

If you live in California, the next time your driver’s license comes up for renewal you’ll be handed a completely new version. The state’s DMV has introduced a redesigned license and ID card with updated looks and added layers of security.

This isn’t a case of someone in the department deciding to add a little glitter to the mix. The new cards have new security upgrades to safeguard personal information and, yes, a few new stylistic touches to honor the Golden State.

California Icons in Print

The fresh design highlights redwoods, coastal cliffs, and golden poppies. They’re part of the first major redesign of the license and ID card since 2018 when the nationwide REAL ID program began. California’s new license meets those federal requirements but also goes a step further with technology not yet widely adopted.

For example, citizens will find a digital security signature embedded within one of the barcodes on the back. California is one of the first states to adopt such technology.

What that actually looks like remains a mystery. Officials have not disclosed exactly how the system works or the specific benefits beyond enhanced protection, though the DMV has confirmed the upgrade and we’ve asked for more details.

“The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” DMV Director Steve Gordon explained.

“While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires,” he added.

Phasing Out the Old Strip

Notably, the state hasn’t made a significant security update to the license since 2010. The new ones lose the old magnetic strip on the back and should, in theory, make counterfeiting and unauthorized use harder.

Licenses will remain priced at $45, while ID cards cost $39 moving forward. These changes come at the same time that other states are making similar moves.

Keeping Pace With Other States

Texas altered its license a few months ago to feature an updated design and advanced security features. Michigan, New York, and Virginia have also replaced their license designs in the last few years.

With this decision, California keeps pace with its peers and might even push technology ahead a bit. We’ll update this story if state officials get back to us on how the digital security signature actually functions.
