Volvo Just Gave Its Three-Row EV A Huge Upgrade

  • Volvo introduced the 2026 EX90 with a new 800-volt electrical architecture.
  • DC fast charging now supports 350 kW output, reducing charging times.
  • Company confirmed plans to build a next-generation hybrid in the US soon.

Volvo has introduced the 2026 EX90 and it’s a significant improvement as the crossover features an all-new 800-volt electrical system. It replaces the previous 400-volt architecture and promises a host of benefits.

The automaker added their battery management software uses a smart algorithm to work in “tandem with the 800V system to optimize charging, making it significantly faster than previously possible.” Thanks to the changes, a 350 kW DC fast charger can add up to 155 miles (250 km) of range in just 10 minutes. That’s quite a bit faster as last year’s model was limited to 250 kW.

Besides quicker recharging times, Volvo hinted at “more power for faster acceleration” as well as improved efficiency. The company also alluded to weight reductions in both the battery and motors.

The upgrades extend beyond the powertrain as the 2026 EX90 comes with a new electrochromic panoramic roof. It’s borrowed from the ES90 sedan and features ‘dimmable’ glass that can be adjusted at the touch of a button.

Buyers will also find several new features including “connected safety alerts for slippery roads, hazards ahead, and accidents ahead.” The Emergency Stop Assist system can also call Volvo’s emergency call center, once the vehicle automatically comes to a halt after the driver becomes unresponsive.

Rounding out the highlights is an upgraded automatic emergency steering system that works in darkness. Volvo also mentioned a parallel parking function for Park Pilot assist.

Last but not least, the EX90 has gotten smarter as it has been equipped with dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computers, which provide 500 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) of computing power. Interestingly, owners of the 2025 EX90 will also receive this upgrade by scheduling a visit with their Volvo dealer.

Volvo Invests In America

Earlier this summer, Volvo announced plans to build the XC60 in the United States starting in late 2026. It will be built at their Ridgeville, South Carolina plant and the company confirmed there will be mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.

Fast forward to today and Volvo said they’ll continue investing in the plant as part of an effort to reach full utilization in the coming years. The facility has a production capacity of 150,000 units annually, but it’s nowhere close to that as it currently builds the slow-selling EX90 and Polestar 3.

The XC60 will help, but Volvo also announced plans for a “new, next-generation hybrid model.” It will go into production before 2030 and is “designed to meet the specific demands of the US market.” Volvo didn’t elaborate, but it’s rumored to be the next-generation XC90.

Regardless, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said “Our investment plans once again reinforce our long-term commitment to the US market and our manufacturing operations in South Carolina.” He added 2025 marks their 70th anniversary in the United States and they have sold more than five million vehicles there in the past seven decades.
