Toyota’s GR Yaris Gets Cool Aero Bits

  • The Toyota GR Yaris can now be ordered with the Aero Performance Package in Japan.
  • It includes a splitter, a vented hood, extra ducts, an underbody cover and a rear wing.
  • It is available for the stripped-out RC and the flagship RZ “High Performance” trims.

In April, Toyota introduced an upgraded version of the GR Yaris in Japan, together with the announcement of the Aero Performance Package. The latter will finally go on sale in the Japanese market from October 1, with the automaker announcing its local pricing.

The Aero Performance Package comprises six items designed for improving cooling and aerodynamics. These were developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing and their professional drivers during their participation at the Super Taikyu Series and the All Japan Rally Championship. The upgrades will be available on two trims of the GR Yaris – the stripped-out RC and the flagship RZ “High Performance”.

The vented hood mirrors the shape of carbon fiber hood of the hardcore GRMN Yaris but it is made of aluminum. It is combined with a splitter that reduces front lift and front fender ducts that improve handling and steering feel during nose dives.

The package also includes a flat cover for the fuel tank that optimizes airflow under the vehicle and extra ducts on the rear for reducing the aerodynamic loads on the bumper. Still, the most obvious addition is the large, adjustable rear wing that helps improve stability at high speeds and in hard braking.

The GR Yaris is powered by a turbo 1.6-liter three-cylinder generating 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic gearbox that send power to all four corners via the rally-derived GR-Four AWD system. Furthermore, the RZ “High Performance” trim comes with Torsen limited-slip differentials and forged BBS aluminum wheels.

Sales of the GR Yaris with the Aero Performance Package will commence in October 1. The new version of the hot hatchback is priced from ¥4,055,000 ($27,500) for the RC trim with the manual gearbox and tops out at ¥5,825,000 ($39,500) for the RZ “High Performance” trim with the eight-speed automatic. In other words, the Aero Performance Package adds ¥495,000 ($3,400) to the price of the GR Yaris compared to the equivalent trims without it.

Besides Japan, the Aero Performance Package is expected to roll out in other markets like Europe, where it was exhibited earlier this year.
