  • Only 44 Nissan Skyline GT-R 400Rs were made despite plans for 100.
  • Power is provided by an upgraded 2.77-liter twin-turbo six with 400 hp.
  • With just 4,408 miles, it remains in pristine condition inside and out.

Some cars earn legendary status almost instantly, while others take a little longer to win over enthusiasts. The R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R often stands in the shadow of the R32 and R34, yet it gave rise to one of the rarest and most coveted Skylines ever built: the 400R. Created in honor of Nissan’s entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, just 44 were produced, and this low-mileage example could bring in more than $1 million.

The R33 GT-R entered the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans but was beaten handily by the McLaren F1 GTR, and the following year, also outdone by the Porsche 911 GT1. While Nissan didn’t claim victory, it decided to celebrate its Le Mans entry with the 400R, planned to be capped at just 100 units.

Power with purpose

As the name implies, each car was modified to deliver 400 hp thanks to an enlarged 2.77-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six and more boost. While plans called for 100 to be built, Nismo confirms that only 44 were ever made.

RM Sotheby’s is handling the sale of this particular example during Monterey Car Week in California. This 400R was first registered in Japan back in September 1996 before being relocated to Hong Kong. It then returned to Japan in 2021 and remained there for approximately three years before being exported to the United States.

Preserved in detail

Nissan sold different Skyline GT-R 400Rs in a handful of colors, and this car has the Dark Gray Pearl finish. It retains the original white decals running along the sides and retains the original white wheels. Having covered only 7,093 km (4,408 miles) since new, the car’s exterior remains in remarkable condition, with paintwork, trim, and detailing that still appear almost factory fresh.

Inside, the 400R is equally well-preserved. The cabin retains its original Nismo-branded seats, which feature supportive bolstering and high-quality materials. The matching Nismo steering wheel shows only minimal signs of use, further underscoring the car’s limited time on the road.

The auction house expects it to sell for between $900,000 and $1.1 million. While that may sound like a lot for a nearly 30-year-old Nissan, the 400R will only increase in value over time. You can check out the listing for yourself here.
